GTA 6 Extended Look Recap

The Extended Look aired on 27 August 2026 and ran just under half an hour. Here is what it showed, from the new wanted system to racing, and what it left out.

What the Extended Look showed

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look was Rockstar's longest official showing of the game so far: just under half an hour of in-game footage following Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos around Vice City. It premiered on 27 August 2026 and showed far more gameplay than either trailer, including a reworked wanted system, dialogue choices, break-ins and racing.

It confirmed nothing new about a PC version or the next GTA Online. The release date it pointed to was the one already announced: 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

When and where it aired

  • Netflix: Thursday 27 August 2026 at 3 pm ET, as a timed exclusive.
  • Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA VI site: 9 pm ET the same day, free to watch.
  • Runtime: TechRadar reports Netflix gave an official runtime of just under half an hour.
  • Capture: Rockstar says the presentation was "Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5". TechRadar adds that this was the base PS5.

The story it set up

Rockstar's page sums up the premise: Jason and Lucia "have always known the deck is stacked against them", but when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida, "forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive".

PCGamesN noted that little of the storyline was revealed, which keeps spoilers to a minimum before launch. Rockstar describes the game as "a single player experience" in its 24 June 2026 Newswire post announcing pre-orders. It has not given a length for the main story.

Gameplay highlights

PCGamesN's breakdown of the footage picked out these details:

  • A wanted system with the familiar five-star display plus an on-screen breakdown of what is driving your heat level, including CCTV visibility, nearby enemies, gun noise and what you are wearing.
  • Lucia setting fire to a getaway car with a molotov cocktail after a police chase, which suggests covering your tracks matters.
  • A dialogue feature similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's, letting you choose what your character says to people in the world.
  • More interaction with the world, such as flicking light switches inside buildings.
  • Two ways to break into a car: a slim jim or smashing a window.
  • Shooting that looks like a refined version of GTA 5's, with slow-motion killcams on headshots and improved ragdoll physics.
  • Racing on a dedicated asphalt track and a dirt track, plus a street race.
  • Busier streets, with more traffic and pedestrians than GTA 5, random road events, and far more detailed building and car interiors.

What it did not show

The Extended Look left several of the biggest questions open. There was no PC announcement, no release date for an online mode and no official map size. The full radio line-up, the file size and any PS5 Pro enhancements were not covered either.

Performance did come up in coverage afterwards. Digital Foundry, as reported by TechRadar, described "relatively stable and well-paced 30fps output, with only very occasional single frame drops" in the footage, and called it "the most impressive example of real-time game rendering" it had seen. That is an analysis of the video, not a Rockstar specification. Our FPS and performance article covers the frame rate reports in detail.

How to read the footage

The Extended Look is a curated sample. A feature that was not shown is not necessarily missing from the game, and the systems on screen were shown in short moments that may work differently in a full mission. Treat the breakdowns above as what Rockstar chose to show, not a full feature list.

It is still the best official evidence of how the game looks and plays before launch, because it is in-game footage from the console version. The full video remains on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA VI page. Rockstar Newswire is where any further footage or launch details will be announced. Our trailer history article puts the Extended Look alongside the two earlier trailers.
