How big is GTA 6? File size and what is official

Rockstar has not published an install size for GTA 6. Here are the estimates and the leak, why they differ, and a sensible figure to plan around.

How big is GTA 6? No official size yet

Rockstar has not published an install size for GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S at the time of writing (October 2026), and its GTA VI page lists no storage requirement. Every number in circulation, from about 100GB to 300GB, is an estimate, a leak or a fan guess. The official figure will appear on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings; pre-loading opens on 12 November 2026.

IBTimes UK, writing on 21 September 2026, put it plainly: "The GTA 6 file size has yet to be confirmed." It also notes that Sony has highlighted the PS5's fast SSD as part of the game's loading performance, which says nothing about how much space the game takes.

The estimates in circulation

  • Just under 200GB on PS5: a claim from the GTA 6 Intel account, reported by Upcomer. It is a leak, not a confirmed figure.
  • 150 to 300GB: the range of Reddit guesses covered by IBTimes UK, including 184GB, 218GB, 250GB and 300GB.
  • 244.86GB: a Reddit post claimed a PlayStation screen showed this figure as required. IBTimes UK could not verify it, and Sony's public store page did not show it.
  • 150 to 200GB for the base game, with a 20 to 50GB day-one patch on top: GTABoom's pre-load guide.
  • 150 to 180GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and 110 to 140GB on Xbox Series S: StealthyGaming, which labels these as its own estimates.
  • 100 to 300GB: the broad range given by the German site MeinMMO, based on what is known about the game so far.

Why the estimates differ so much

Nobody outside Rockstar has the final build, so each figure rests on a method rather than a measurement. Some compare GTA 6 with earlier Rockstar games. StealthyGaming, for example, starts from Red Dead Redemption 2, which settled at around 150GB, and works up from there. Others rely on unnamed sources or on screenshots that cannot be checked. Planning guides then add an allowance for a day-one patch.

Assumptions about compression, audio and texture quality also differ, and the Series S version may use trimmed assets, which is why StealthyGaming gives it a lower range. Two estimates can both be wrong for different reasons.

How GTA 6 compares with GTA V

GTA V is the obvious reference point, but it is a moving one. IBTimes UK notes that Rockstar's own information for the 2015 PC launch listed 65GB of required storage, and that current requirements for GTA V vary by platform and edition. A game that grows through years of updates ends up far larger than its launch size.

The GTA 6 estimates above range from roughly twice to more than four times that original PC figure.

A sensible planning figure

If you want one number to plan around, GTABoom's advice is the most practical: "Plan for up to 250GB total and you will not be caught out." That covers the upper end of most base-game estimates plus a day-one patch. It is a buffer, not a requirement from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft.

The day-one patch matters because it downloads on top of the pre-load. GTABoom also points out that the game stays locked until 19 November even after the pre-load completes, so a patch may still be waiting on launch day.

Our storage checklist explains how to free space on PS5 and Xbox before then.

How to check the official number

  1. Open the GTA 6 listing on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store and look for the size in the product details.
  2. Compare it with the free space shown in your console's storage settings.
  3. Add room for a day-one patch, then clear space before 12 November so the pre-load is not interrupted.

FAQ

How big is GTA 6 on PS5?

Rockstar has not published a figure. A leak reported by Upcomer suggests just under 200GB, and most estimates fall between 150GB and 250GB, but none is confirmed.

Is GTA 6 bigger than GTA 5?

Every estimate says so, but there is no official comparison. GTA V needed 65GB for its 2015 PC launch, and every GTA 6 estimate is well above that.

Is the size the same on Xbox Series X|S?

No official figure exists for any console. StealthyGaming expects the Series S version to be smaller because of trimmed assets, but that is its own estimate.
