A release night with friends needs more than a console. Timing, a countdown, the decor, the food and some rules for passing the controller.
When to hold it
At the time of writing (October 2026), Rockstar has set Grand Theft Auto VI for release on Thursday 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The date has moved before, so check Rockstar's Newswire a week ahead.
A Thursday is a work and school night. Two options work: a small release night with the people who took Friday off, or a bigger party on the Saturday, 21 November, when everyone has had a day to install and play.
Rockstar says digital pre-orders can pre-load from 12 November. Do it days before, on every console you plan to use. Nobody wants to spend the party watching a download bar.
A countdown poster
A countdown builds the evening before it starts. Make a poster of your group with the GTA VI logo, and post a new version every day in the last week with the days left as the numeral: 7, 6, 5 and so on. A single digit sits centred behind the words. Use the Story / Reels download (1080 by 1920) for stories and the group chat.
On the day, switch the numeral back to VI and use the same poster as the invitation.
The invitation
- Photos of everyone invited, one per panel. Nine-panel layouts fit a big group; Quad fits four.
- Three lines of up to 16 characters each: "launch night" / "thu 19 nov" / "at jay's".
- The Vice City template (cyan and magenta) for a neon look, or the GTA VI template for the sunset colours.
- Send it with the Share button to WhatsApp or Telegram, or download the Instagram post size.
Decor: Vice City in a living room
GTA VI is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar's take on Florida, with Vice City at its heart. Lean into that.
- Pink and cyan lights. LED strips behind the TV do most of the work.
- Palm trees, inflatable flamingos and a beach towel or two on the sofa.
- The group poster printed large as the backdrop for photos.
- A countdown clock on a second screen or a laptop until the game is ready to play.
Food, drinks and music
Florida food fits the setting and is easy to make in bulk: Cuban sandwiches, fish tacos, key lime pie. For a nod to the series, put out burgers labelled Burger Shot and chicken labelled Cluckin' Bell, the fictional fast food chains from the games. Mix bright, fruity drinks with plenty of ice and garnish them like a beach bar.
Rockstar has announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album for the same release day, so you can put it on while people arrive. Before that, a 1980s synth-pop playlist is a safe bet: the original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was set in 1986.
Sharing one console
Rockstar describes GTA VI as a single-player game, so with one console only one person plays at a time. Set some rules before the first person picks up the controller.
- Turns by mission or by 20 minutes, whichever comes first.
- The host plays the opening hour. It is their copy.
- Everyone else bets on what happens next: who crashes first, how long until the first wanted star.
- A second screen with something else for people who want a break from watching.
Make the poster
