Preloading opens on 12 November 2026, a week before GTA 6 unlocks. Here is who can preload, how to start it, and what is still unknown.
The preload date
GTA 6 preloading opens on 12 November 2026, one week before the game launches on 19 November. Rockstar's Newswire post of 24 June 2026 says players who pre-order digital versions can begin pre-loading on 12 November "to ensure they are able to play at launch". It applies on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and MP1st reports that it is open to pre-orders of either edition.
Preloading is a download, not early access. The files sit on your console until the game unlocks on 19 November.
What time preloading starts
Rockstar has not given a start time for the preload. ARY News reports that it begins at midnight local time, which matches how pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026 (Rockstar did say midnight local time for those). MeinMMO says no time has been announced. Treat midnight as likely but unconfirmed, and check your library on the morning of 12 November.
The unlock time on 19 November has not been confirmed by Rockstar either, as of 7 October 2026. Our release time guide covers what is known.
Who can preload
- Digital pre-order buyers on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, from 12 November.
- Physical buyers. The box contains a download code rather than a disc, and Rockstar says the physical version is available from 12 November to support pre-loading. You need the box in hand to redeem the code, as GTABoom and ARY News point out, so a delivery that arrives later than 12 November delays your preload.
How to preload
- Before 12 November, check that your pre-order is on the console account you play on, and free up storage.
- On 12 November, open your game library on PS5 or Xbox and find Grand Theft Auto VI. If the download has not started by itself, select the game and start the download there.
- Physical buyers: redeem the code from the box first, then download from the library.
- Leave the console connected so the download can finish well before launch.
- On 19 November, start the game and install any day-one update before you play.
How much space you need
Rockstar has not published the install size. GTABoom estimates roughly 150 to 200 GB for the base game, plus a day-one patch it guesses at 20 to 50 GB, and advises planning for up to 250 GB in total. MeinMMO cites estimates of 100 to 300 GB. These are guesses, not store figures, so the store listing is the place to check once preloading opens. Our file size guide and storage checklist go into more detail.
What is still unknown
If you order a box online, check the retailer's dispatch date. Rockstar's 12 November date is when the physical version becomes available, not necessarily when it reaches your door, so a digital pre-order is the surer route to downloading on day one.
Until these are settled, the safest plan is to have the space free and the console online before 12 November. Rockstar Newswire is where any official update will appear.
- The exact start time on 12 November.
- The final download size and the size of any day-one patch.
- Whether the preload opens at the same local time in every region.
- The unlock time on 19 November.
FAQ
When can you preload GTA 6?
From 12 November 2026, a week before launch on 19 November. Rockstar announced the date on its Newswire on 24 June 2026.
Is preloading the same as early access?
No. Preloading downloads the game files so they are ready on release day. The game still unlocks on 19 November.
Can I preload the Ultimate Edition?
Yes. MP1st reports that pre-load is available to everyone who pre-orders, whichever edition they choose. Ultimate Edition extras still unlock through the story after launch, so preloading does not give you early access to them either.
Can I preload a physical copy?
Yes, once you have the box. Rockstar says the physical version, which contains a download code, is available from 12 November to support pre-loading.
Do I get the pre-order bonus if I preload?
The bonus depends on when you buy, not when you download. Rockstar says pre-orders and purchases made before 20 November get the Vintage Vice City Pack.
