GTA 6 frame rate: 30 FPS or 60 FPS?

A preview report says GTA 6 runs at 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and no 60 FPS mode is confirmed. Here is where that comes from and what Digital Foundry saw.

Short answer: 30 FPS on console, no 60 FPS mode confirmed

GTA 6 is expected to run at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and no 60 FPS mode has been confirmed at the time of writing (October 2026). That figure comes from a preview account rather than a Rockstar spec sheet: Rockstar has not published frame rate, resolution or graphics mode details for the 19 November 2026 release.

Where the 30 FPS figure comes from

The report is secondhand. YouTuber Davy Jones visited Rockstar North for a preview and said Rockstar North's head of development, Rob Nelson, told him the game currently runs at 30 FPS on console during development, according to TechRadar on 28 August 2026.

TechRadar also quotes the Brazilian outlet Flow Games, which interviewed Jones. In that account, Nelson said the technical team would need to be consulted to decide whether a 60 FPS option comes at launch or later, and that he had no details on resolution or on the use of ray tracing.

HWBusters, writing on 29 August 2026, summarises the position as a single 30 FPS target with no performance mode and no resolution versus frame rate toggle on either console. Asked about 60 FPS, the studio "had nothing to share for now", according to HWBusters.

What Digital Foundry saw in the Extended Look

The Extended Look that premiered on 27 August 2026 was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, Rockstar says. Digital Foundry analysed it and, as reported by TechRadar, called it "the most impressive example of real-time game rendering" it had seen.

Digital Foundry described "relatively stable and well-paced 30fps output, with only very occasional single frame drops". It added that the focus was "maximizing the level of visual detail at a fixed 30fps frame rate on all platforms", with the trade-offs landing in image quality and animation smoothness rather than the size or detail of the world.

On 60 FPS, Digital Foundry was blunt. It called "a 60fps version extremely unlikely on console hardware", because there is no way to win back enough GPU and especially CPU time to update the world every 16.7 milliseconds without cutting it back. That is an outside analysis of the footage, not a Rockstar statement, but it is the most detailed technical reading available.

The 60 FPS rumour

One rumour points the other way. The Rock and Borys podcast claimed on 29 June 2026 that a 60 FPS performance mode is "very likely" on consoles, as reported by TheGamer and collected by OpenCritic. Rockstar has not confirmed it, and it predates both the preview report and Digital Foundry's analysis.

What 30 FPS and 60 FPS mean in practice

At 30 FPS each frame stays on screen for about 33.3 milliseconds. At 60 FPS the budget is about 16.7 milliseconds, so the picture updates twice as often. The difference shows most in fast driving, camera pans and gunfights, where the image changes quickly.

Even frame pacing matters as much as the number. A 30 FPS game that delivers every frame on time feels smoother than one that keeps missing its target, and Digital Foundry said the footage "maintains its 33.3ms cadence with care", with Rockstar balancing CPU and GPU work to use the hardware fully.

PS5 Pro and Xbox Series S

HWBusters notes that GTA 6 is listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what that label means, so it does not tell you the frame rate. TechRadar likewise reports that Rockstar has not confirmed whether the game will run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro. Digital Foundry suggested the game could look better on PS5 Pro thanks to its stronger GPU and PSSR upscaling, but no footage from that console has been shown.

No separate performance target has been published for the Xbox Series S. Our Xbox Series S article covers the predictions for that console.

What to check before you buy

  • Rockstar's GTA VI page and Rockstar Newswire for any official frame rate or graphics mode statement
  • The PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store listing, which may describe enhanced features closer to launch
  • Technical analysis after 19 November 2026, which will measure the final game on each console
