Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 file size, so plan for about 250GB free. Use this checklist to clear space before pre-loading opens on 12 November.
How much space to clear for GTA 6
Plan for about 250GB of free space on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not published an official size, so that figure is a buffer rather than a requirement: GTABoom's pre-load guide estimates 150 to 200GB for the base game plus a 20 to 50GB day-one patch, and advises: "Plan for up to 250GB total and you will not be caught out." Once the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store shows the real size, use that instead.
Fan guesses collected by IBTimes UK range from 150 to 300GB, so aiming for the middle of that spread is the safer choice. Our file size article covers every estimate and where it comes from.
The key dates
- 12 November 2026: digital pre-orders can pre-load from this date. The physical version contains a download code in the box and is also available from 12 November to support pre-loading.
- 19 November 2026: release day. The game stays locked until then even if the pre-load has finished.
- Launch day: any day-one patch downloads on top of the pre-load, so the space you cleared needs to cover both.
Checklist: before 12 November
- Open the storage settings on your console and note how much space is free.
- List the games you still play, so you know what to keep and what can go.
- Delete games you have finished. Digital purchases can be downloaded again from your library later.
- Check that save data for the games you delete is backed up, either in the cloud or on the console, before you remove them.
- Clear large video captures and screenshots you have already shared or copied elsewhere.
- If you still cannot reach about 250GB, add an expansion drive, as GTABoom suggests, rather than starting the download and hoping it fits.
- Check the free space again just before 12 November, because game updates and other downloads can use the room you cleared.
Why the buffer matters
A pre-load fills the space before launch day, and a day-one patch then has to fit beside it. If the drive is nearly full, the patch can stall on release day, which is the moment you most want to play. Leaving more room than the base estimate avoids that.
GTA 6 will also share the drive with everything else installed, and other games keep updating in the background. A drive that has 220GB free on 1 November may have less on 12 November.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Neither platform has a published storage figure for GTA 6 yet, so the same planning advice applies to both. Estimates are mostly not split by console. The exception is StealthyGaming's guess that the Xbox Series S version will be smaller because of trimmed assets, which matters most on that console. Our Xbox Series S article covers that console in detail.
If you own more than one console, check each one separately: storage is not shared between them, and you only need to clear space on the console you will play on.
Physical copies need the space too
Buying the boxed version does not save storage. The physical version contains a download code in the box rather than the full game, so the game still downloads to your console. Clear the same amount of space whichever version you buy.
Download speed also depends on demand. GTABoom notes that real-world speeds are usually lower than advertised and that heavy demand on launch will slow downloads, which is one more reason to pre-load early rather than on 19 November.
