GTA 6 Ultimate Edition: is it worth the extra $20?

The GTA 6 Ultimate Edition costs $20 more than Standard. Here is Rockstar's list of extras, how they unlock and who will get the most from them.

Short answer

The GTA 6 Ultimate Edition is worth the extra $20 if you plan to spend a long time in Leonida and you like collecting cars, weapons, outfits and businesses. If you mainly want the story, the Standard Edition gives you the same game for $79.99 against $99.99 for Ultimate (US prices reported by TechRadar and MP1st).

The extras are spread through the story rather than handed over at the start, so their value grows with how much you play.

What the extra $20 buys

Rockstar's GTA VI page lists the Ultimate Edition contents. They fall into four groups.

  • Vehicles: a '95 Grotti Cheetah, a '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy with the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay, a Squalo boat at Washington Beach, Jason's safehouse vehicles (a Dinka Enduro motorcycle and a Crest Kayak) and exclusive mods for his Vapid Ganado pickup.
  • Weapons: Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers, plus personalised Girardi ES9 (Jason) and Klose K17 (Lucia) pistols.
  • Shops and services: Rideout Customs, Sara's Unisex Salon, a Stockyard streetwear shop, Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor with over 50 tattoos designed by FAILE, and One-Eyed Willie's Mod Shop in Lake Leonida.
  • Activities and clothing: a raid on the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store, a project car commission from the collector Wyman, and a Macca the Gator capsule clothing collection.

How the extras unlock

Rockstar says Ultimate Edition bonuses are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter. In practice that means the Cheetah, the shops and the commission arrive as you progress, not as a pile of gear on day one.

Several of the shops are described by Rockstar as only open for business with the Ultimate Edition. That matters if you care about appearance: the salon, the streetwear shop and the tattoo parlour add looks for both Jason and Lucia that Standard players will not have.

What both editions share

The game itself is the same. Rockstar says pre-orders and purchases made before 20 November get the Vintage Vice City Pack whichever edition you choose, so the bonus is not a reason to pick Ultimate. Digital pre-orders of either edition also include a free month of GTA+, according to MP1st, and both editions can pre-load from 12 November 2026.

Who should buy the Ultimate Edition

  • You expect to play well beyond the main story and explore the whole map.
  • You enjoy customising cars and characters, since most extras are vehicles, mods and cosmetics.
  • You like side content such as the Wyman project car commission and the PTT Youngin$ raid.
  • You would rather pay once at launch than come back for an upgrade.

Who should stay with Standard

  • You want the story and nothing more, and the $20 matters to your budget.
  • You are not interested in tattoos, salons or extra outfits.
  • You would rather see how the extras look in play before spending more.

The upgrade route

An Ultimate Edition Upgrade is reported to cost $20 (MP1st; GTABoom says Xbox lists it at US$20), but Rockstar has not published the price, so check your store. MP1st says Standard buyers can upgrade at any time.

If that price holds, starting with Standard costs nothing extra in the long run: Standard plus the upgrade comes to the same $99.99. That makes Standard the low-risk choice if you are unsure. Our GTA 6 price article compares the two editions side by side.

A simple rule

Read the list above and count the items you would actually use. If you can name three or more, such as the Cheetah, the tattoo parlour and the mod shop, the Ultimate Edition is likely worth it. If the list leaves you cold, buy Standard and keep the upgrade in reserve.

FAQ

Do Ultimate Edition items unlock straight away?

No. Rockstar says the bonuses are threaded across the story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter.

Is the Ultimate Edition the same as the Vice City Collection?

No. The Ultimate Edition is a game edition. The Vice City Collection is a limited-edition merchandise box, and Rockstar says the game is sold separately.

Can I upgrade from the Standard Edition later?

MP1st reports that Standard buyers can upgrade at any time for $20, and GTABoom says Xbox lists the upgrade at US$20. Rockstar has not published the price, so check your store.
