GTA 6 is coming to Xbox Series S, but Rockstar has published no Series S performance target. Here are Digital Foundry's predictions and the storage estimates.
Is GTA 6 coming to Xbox Series S?
Yes. Rockstar lists GTA 6 for Xbox Series X|S, a single listing that covers both models, so the Series S is a supported console for the 19 November 2026 release. What Rockstar has not published is a separate performance target for the Series S, so how it will look and run there is not confirmed.
What Digital Foundry predicted
After the second trailer in May 2025, Digital Foundry predicted that GTA 6 would likely run at a significantly lower resolution on the Series S, around 720p against an expected 1440p on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as reported by GTABoom on 12 May 2025. The reason given was memory: 8GB on the Series S, compared with 12.5GB on PS5 and 13GB on the Series X.
The same analysis expected noticeably lower texture streaming quality, reduced volumetric effects and lower resolution shadows on the Series S. These are predictions based on trailer footage and hardware specifications, not measurements of the game running on a Series S.
What is known about frame rate
The most specific frame rate report covers all consoles. YouTuber Davy Jones said Rockstar North's head of development, Rob Nelson, told him during a preview that the game runs at 30 FPS on console during development, according to TechRadar, which lists the Series S among the launch consoles. No separate Series S figure has been given, and Rockstar has published no official frame rate. Our frame rate article covers that report and the 60 FPS question in detail.
What Take-Two has said about the Series S
Take-Two's chief executive, Strauss Zelnick, was asked on the earnings call of 6 November 2024 whether the Series S could cause problems for GTA 6, according to MP1st. He did not name the console in his answer, but said: "We support the platforms where the consumers are for as long as they're there" and "we find a way to support platforms despite different levels of tech." He added: "I'm not really worried."
That is reassurance that the Series S version will ship, not a statement about how it will perform.
Storage on the Series S
The Series S has a 512GB internal SSD, and GamingBolt reported at launch in 2020 that only about 364GB of it is usable once the system software is installed. That is a press figure rather than an official Microsoft number, and it can shift with system updates, so check the Storage section in your console settings for the figure on your unit.
Microsoft's Jason Ronald told EDGE magazine at the time that the team "felt confident in the 512GB of the Xbox Series S." GTA 6 will test that more than most games.
How much space GTA 6 may need
Rockstar has not published an install size for any console, so every figure here is an estimate. StealthyGaming estimates a Series S base install of 110 to 140GB, because it expects trimmed assets, or about 130 to 170GB with a day-one patch. Those are the author's figures, not Rockstar's or Microsoft's.
Even the higher estimate would leave room on a 364GB drive, but not much once other games are installed. The same guide suggests keeping 200 to 250GB free before launch, which is a cautious planning buffer rather than a requirement.
Practical steps before 19 November
- Check the Storage section and note how much space is free on the internal drive
- Remove games you no longer play, or move them to an expansion card or external drive
- Pre-order if you want to preload: digital pre-orders can pre-load from 12 November 2026
- Check the Microsoft Store listing for the official size once it is published
FAQ
Will GTA 6 run worse on Xbox Series S?
Nothing has been confirmed. Digital Foundry predicted lower resolution and lower detail on the Series S in May 2025, but those were predictions from trailer footage, not tests of the final game.
How much storage does GTA 6 need on Xbox Series S?
Rockstar has not published a figure. StealthyGaming estimates 110 to 140GB for the base install on the Series S, or about 130 to 170GB with a day-one patch.
When can I start downloading GTA 6 on Xbox Series S?
Digital pre-orders can pre-load from 12 November 2026, a week before the 19 November release. The physical version contains a download code in the box and is also available from 12 November to support pre-loading.
