The physical version of GTA 6 contains a download code instead of a disc. Here is what that means for pre-loading, storage and the pre-order bonus.
What the GTA 6 physical copy contains
The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI does not contain a game disc. Rockstar's Newswire post of 24 June 2026 says the box contains a download code, and that the physical version will be available from 12 November 2026 to support pre-loading. You redeem the code on your console and download the game, just as you would with a digital copy.
The code is for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, the only two platforms Rockstar has announced. There is no PC version, physical or digital.
When the download can start
Rockstar timed the physical release to pre-loading. Digital pre-orders can begin pre-loading on 12 November, and the physical version is available from the same day, a week before launch on 19 November 2026. MP1st reports that pre-load is open to pre-orders of any edition.
- Collect or receive the box from 12 November. GTABoom notes that you need the box in hand before you can redeem the code.
- Redeem the code on the console account you play on.
- Start the download straight away, so the install is finished before 19 November.
What a code means in practice
A code in a box behaves like a digital purchase. The game is tied to the console account that redeems the code, it installs from the internet rather than from a disc, and a console without a disc drive can play it. The trade-off is that you cannot install the game from the box alone. You need an internet connection and enough free storage before you can play.
Rockstar has not published the install size. GTABoom estimates roughly 150 to 200 GB for the base game, but calls it an estimate, so clear plenty of space before 12 November and check the store listing closer to launch.
- Keep the code private until you redeem it, and treat it like a voucher.
- Keep the box and receipt until the code has been redeemed successfully.
- Check which console the box is for before you open it.
The pre-order bonus on a physical copy
Rockstar says pre-orders and purchases made before 20 November get the Vintage Vice City Pack, which covers physical buyers too. The Sixth Axis reports that physical pre-orders include the pack "while stocks last", so check the retailer's listing if the bonus matters to you. The free month of GTA+ is tied to digital pre-orders on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, according to MP1st, so a physical copy does not include it.
How this differs from the Vice City Collection
The Goodtime State: Vice City Collection is a separate product. It is a limited-edition box of merchandise, and Rockstar's Newswire says the game is sold separately, so it contains no game code at all. Our Vice City Collection article lists what is inside.
Physical or digital?
A boxed copy suits people who want something on the shelf or who prefer to buy from a retailer. It does not give you a disc to lend or play offline from the box. A digital pre-order gives you the same game, the same 12 November pre-load and the GTA+ month, without waiting for delivery.
TechRadar and MP1st report US prices of $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Retailer prices for a boxed copy may differ, so compare before you buy. Our price article covers the two editions.
