GTA 6 carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating with seven content descriptors. This guide explains each one, what In-Game Purchases means and how other countries rate the game.

What rating GTA 6 has

GTA 6 is rated M for Mature by the ESRB, which the ESRB describes as content "generally suitable for ages 17 and up". Rockstar's GTA VI page and Newswire posts show the Mature rating with seven content descriptors and the In-Game Purchases notice, and GTABoom reports that the US PlayStation and Xbox store listings display Mature 17+.

The ESRB says a Mature game may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and strong language. The descriptors below show which of those apply to GTA 6.

What each content descriptor means

Rockstar lists these seven descriptors for Grand Theft Auto VI. The definitions are the ESRB's own, from its ratings guide.

  • Blood and Gore: depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts.
  • Intense Violence: graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict, which may involve realistic blood, gore, weapons and depictions of human injury and death.
  • Mature Humor: depictions or dialogue involving adult humour, including sexual references.
  • Nudity: graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity.
  • Strong Language: explicit and/or frequent use of profanity.
  • Strong Sexual Content: explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behaviour, possibly including nudity.
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol: the ESRB defines drug use as the consumption or use of illegal drugs, and alcohol use as the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

What In-Game Purchases means

In-Game Purchases is an interactive element, not a content descriptor, and the ESRB says interactive elements do not influence the rating. The label means the game contains offers to buy digital goods or premiums with real money. It does not say what those offers are.

For GTA 6, GTABoom notes that the notice covers more than the microtransactions many fans assume. One known example is an Ultimate Edition Upgrade, reported to cost $20 (MP1st; GTABoom says Xbox lists it at US$20), but Rockstar has not published the price, so check your store. Rockstar has not announced any other paid content for GTA VI.

How other countries rate GTA 6

Ratings differ by country. GTABoom reports that regional PlayStation Store listings checked on 2 October 2026 show R18+ in Australia and R18 in New Zealand, both listing "Sex Scenes" among the warnings, and PEGI 18 in the UK, with Sexual Content and In-Game Purchases.

The wording varies too. The US descriptor is Strong Sexual Content, while Australia and New Zealand name Sex Scenes. The listings do not say whether that refers to story scenes, optional activities or both, so do not read more into it than the label says.

What this means for parents

  • The ESRB rates GTA 6 for ages 17 and up, and the UK, Australian and New Zealand ratings set the bar at 18.
  • Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto VI as a single player experience and has not announced an online mode for it, which matters if you are weighing contact with strangers online.
  • Set the console's parental controls for age limits and spending limits, since the In-Game Purchases notice means paid content can be bought from inside the game.
  • Read the descriptors, not only the age number, to judge whether the content suits your child.
  • A free month of GTA+ comes with digital pre-orders, according to MP1st. GTA+ is a GTA Online membership that renews monthly at the regular price until cancelled, so check whether one has been redeemed on a family account.

How the rating compares with GTA 5

GTABoom reports that the ESRB's record for GTA V lists exactly the same seven content descriptors as the current US GTA VI listings, so the label itself is not new to the series. The descriptors do not show how individual scenes compare between the two games, so a parent who knows GTA V should not assume GTA 6 is identical in tone.

The rating is a guide to what is in the game, not a judgement on whether it suits a particular child. The descriptors alongside the age give a better picture than the number alone.
