Rockstar has not said why GTA 6 is console only at launch. Its earlier games reached PC seven to 19 months after consoles, and that history is the best guide.
Why is GTA 6 not on PC?
Rockstar has not said why. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has given a public reason for leaving PC out at launch. What is clear is that this is how Rockstar has released its biggest games for almost two decades: consoles first, PC later.
So any explanation of the reason is an inference. The useful evidence is Rockstar's own record, and what Take-Two has said about GTA 6 and PC.
What Take-Two has said
On Take-Two's earnings call in May 2026, chief executive Strauss Zelnick was asked about a PC port. As quoted by Wccftech, he called PC "a great market" that "is growing for console-type titles", and said: "Virtually all of our hit titles end up on all platforms over time. That said, Rockstar Games has announced GTA 6 for console only so far."
That is not a reason, and it is not a PC date. It does show that Take-Two does not treat PC as unimportant, and that "console only" describes the launch rather than a permanent decision. Our article on whether GTA 6 is coming to PC covers the full statement.
GTA IV: console first, PC about seven months later
Grand Theft Auto IV was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 29 April 2008. In August 2008 Rockstar announced a PC version for 18 November in North America and 21 November in Europe, with additional development work by Rockstar Toronto. It slipped slightly and was released on 2 December 2008 in North America and 3 December in PAL regions, about seven months after the console launch.
GTA V: a PC date that slipped
- 17 September 2013: GTA V released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
- June 2014: at E3, Rockstar announced a re-release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The PC version was initially scheduled for release alongside the new consoles.
- 18 November 2014: GTA V released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, without the PC version.
- 14 April 2015: GTA V released on PC after a delay that Rockstar said was for extra "polish", about 19 months after the first console launch.
Red Dead Redemption 2: about a year later
Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 26 October 2018, and on PC on 5 November 2019. That gap of just over a year is the most recent example of Rockstar's pattern, and the closest in scale to GTA 6.
What the pattern suggests, and what it does not
Across the three games, the gap between the first console release and the PC release has been about seven months, about 19 months and about 12 months. Applied to 19 November 2026, those gaps would put a PC release somewhere between mid-2027 and mid-2028.
That is arithmetic on past releases, not a forecast. Rockstar has not said that GTA 6 will follow the same pattern, and GTA V shows that even an announced PC date can move. The history does show one thing: for all three games, a console-only launch did not mean a console-only game.
What to watch for
- A PC announcement would come from Rockstar, on Rockstar Newswire or its official GTA VI page. Treat a PC date from anywhere else as unconfirmed.
- Take-Two's quarterly earnings calls, where analysts regularly ask about PC and where the "so far" wording could change.
