Digital Foundry called the GTA 6 Extended Look the most impressive real-time rendering it had seen. Here is what the footage and cover show, and what Rockstar has not confirmed.

What GTA 6 looks like so far

GTA 6 pairs a sun-bleached, neon-lit Florida-style look with some of the most detailed real-time rendering yet seen on console. The best official evidence is the Extended Look, which Rockstar says was "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5", together with the two trailers and the cover art.

The Extended Look premiered on Netflix on 27 August 2026 at 3 pm ET, then on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA VI site at 9 pm ET. Rockstar has not published a rendering breakdown, a resolution, or a list of graphics settings, so anything more technical than the footage itself comes from outside analysis.

What Digital Foundry said about the footage

Digital Foundry called the Extended Look "the most impressive example of real-time game rendering" it had seen, as reported by TechRadar. It described "relatively stable and well-paced 30fps output, with only very occasional single frame drops".

Its reading is that Rockstar chose detail over frame rate. "It's clear that the focus was absolutely maximizing the level of visual detail at a fixed 30fps frame rate on all platforms," Digital Foundry wrote, and the result is "an unprecedented level of density, material quality and world coherence". The trade-offs, it said, land mainly in image quality and animation smoothness rather than in the size or fidelity of the world.

Digital Foundry also suggested the game could look better on PS5 Pro, thanks to that console's stronger GPU and PSSR upscaling, but Rockstar has not shown any footage running on it.

Vice City and Leonida in the art direction

Rockstar's own copy sets the tone. The GTA VI page calls the setting "Vice City, USA. The darkest side of the sunniest place in America." The pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack, invites players to "flash back to when the neon burned brightest", and the soundtrack is described as capturing "the electric energy of Vice City and Leonida".

That gives the palette: strong sunlight and coastline by day, neon by night. Leonida is the fictional state around Vice City, so the look also has to cover the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga, not just one city.

The cover art

Rockstar revealed the cover on its social media channels on 18 June 2026 with a short teaser video, according to GTABase. It puts Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval front and centre of the grid design that earlier GTA covers made familiar.

The other panels, as GTABase describes them, show a stunt rider launching a motorbike into the air, a police cruiser in pursuit, a helicopter with a mounted minigun, Vice City businessman Boobie Ike, veteran bank robber Raul Bautista, a sports car, a speedboat and an alligator. Together they read as a summary of the game's range, from street chases to the swamps.

The grid is also why GTA covers are so easy to recognise: a set of framed panels, each carrying one character or moment.

The style beyond the game

The same visual language runs through Rockstar's merchandise. The Vintage Vice City Pack includes a weapon pattern inspired by Tommy Vercetti's palm tree shirt. The Goodtime State Vice City Collection, a limited-edition Collector's Box announced on Rockstar Newswire on 24 September 2026, turns in-world brands into objects: a Macca the Gator figure, a Leonida Keys crossbody bag and enamel pin set, and a double-sided souvenir poster with the Leonida map.

These items show how the in-world brands are being used as a visual theme. They say nothing about the game's rendering.

What is not confirmed

  • Native resolution and upscaling method on each console
  • Which ray tracing features are used, if any, and on which consoles
  • What the PS5 Pro Enhanced label adds
  • Any PC graphics options, since no PC version has been announced

Is the GTA 6 trailer real gameplay?

Rockstar says the Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. It is still edited footage, so individual shots may not reflect every moment of play.
