How big is the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar has not published an area for the GTA 6 map. The best figures so far are comparisons: the map is twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, according to YouTuber TGG, who says Rockstar North's head of development, Rob Nelson, gave him the figures during a preview (reported by Kotaku).

That is the most specific size information available at the time of writing (October 2026). It is secondhand, it comes as ratios rather than square kilometres, and Rockstar has not repeated it in its own announcements.

The figures TGG reported

TGG saw the game at a preview at Rockstar North and asked about the map. Kotaku quotes him: '[Head of development Rob Nelson] threw some figures at me.' The figures, all according to TGG, are:

• The whole map is twice the size of GTA 5's map.
• It is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's map.
• Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos, GTA 5's city.
• Vice City and its surrounding suburbs are 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings.

How to read the claim

Kotaku's standfirst says 'Rockstar Games says' the map is three times bigger than its last open-world hit, but the article rests the numbers on TGG's account. PC Gamer reported the same quotes in a headline that says the map is 'apparently' three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's. Both outlets are repeating what one creator says he was told, not a Rockstar spec sheet.

The figures come from a named studio lead, which gives them some weight, but they are ratios with no stated method. They do not say whether water, islands or out-of-bounds areas are counted.

Why GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 give different ratios

If it seems odd that the map is only twice GTA 5's size but three times Red Dead Redemption 2's, PC Gamer's explanation is that GTA 5's map has always been bigger overall, and Red Dead Redemption 2 feels larger because it is more densely packed and you travel through it more slowly.

The Vice City figures may matter more for how the game feels. If the city alone is twice the size of Los Santos, and the city with its suburbs is 11 times Los Santos and its surroundings, then most of the growth is urban. PC Gamer singles this out, noting that Los Santos now feels a little small to stand in for Los Angeles.

What Rockstar has shown of the scale

Rockstar describes the map through its six named regions rather than numbers: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. They range from the city to a 'tropical archipelago' in the Keys and Mount Kalaga, 'a national landmark up against the state's northern border'. Kotaku points to footage of jet skis, kayaks and airboats, and leaked footage of planes flying over the map, as signs of its scope.
